Ingredients

Cupcakes (lemon or basic vanilla flavor, see p.26 or p.18) 1 batch
Buttercream frosting (see p.16) 1 batch
Fondant golf ball-sized portion
Gel food coloring to taste
Cornstarch (for dusting) to taste
Edible glue to taste
Royal icing (see p.16) 1 tbsp
Colored sugar pearls (optional) to taste

Instructions

1

Prepare the cupcakes

Bake the cupcakes according to your chosen recipe and let them cool. Prepare the frosting and tint it as desired. Cover the cakes and let them dry.

2

Make the butterflies

Tint a portion of the fondant and knead until the color is even. Dust the work surface with cornstarch and roll out the fondant to about 3 mm thick. Cut out butterfly shapes and let them dry for about 30 minutes.

3

Make the ladybugs

Tint a portion of the fondant red and a tiny portion black. Shape the red fondant into a body and attach a small flat black piece as the face at one end. Roll two thin black strips for the wing edges and make tiny balls for the spots. Use a toothpick to score markings on the face and use white fondant for the antennae.

4

Assemble the ladybugs

Use edible glue to attach the ladybug to the cupcake. Pipe small flowers around it with royal icing as decoration.

5

Assemble the butterflies

Use edible glue to attach the butterfly to the cupcake. Tint the royal icing in several colors and pipe patterns onto the butterfly wings with a fine tip. Add sugar pearls as desired. You can also pipe dots around the edge of the cupcake and place sugar pearls on them.
