Ingredients

Cupcakes (lemon-flavored or basic vanilla (see p.26 or p.18)) 1
Icing (see p.16) 1
Gel food coloring (various colors) to taste
Royal icing (see p.16) 2 tbsp

Instructions

1

Prepare the cake

Prepare the cupcakes according to the chosen recipe, and set aside to cool.

2

Apply the base color

Make icing with powdered sugar and lemon juice or water. Tint the icing dark blue, green, or brown. Cover the cake and let it dry thoroughly. When the color is dark, it is important to make sure the icing is as dry as possible before starting to pipe.

3

Pipe the lettering

Divide the royal icing into three portions and tint to your desired colors. The royal icing needs to be very stiff; if it is too thin, add sifted powdered sugar. Pipe firm comic-style words onto the cake, such as "BIFF", "POW", and "ZAP". Note: If the base icing is not dry or the royal icing is too wet, the dark colors will bleed into the piping.
