Ingredients

butter (cubed) 115 g
light brown sugar 115 g
egg 1
molasses or corn syrup 12 cl
cake flour 300 g
ginger powder (optional) 1 tsp

Instructions

1

Make the dough

Cream butter and sugar in a bowl. Add egg and syrup (or corn syrup). Add flour and ginger powder. Stir until a thick dough forms.

2

Chill the dough

Knead the dough on a lightly floured work surface until completely smooth. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.

3

Prepare for baking

Preheat oven to 180°C (Th. 6). Grease three baking sheets. Draw an 11 x 8 cm rectangle with a peak on cardboard, cut out the shape to use as a template.

4

Cut the cookies

Roll out the dough on a lightly floured work surface (it may be easier to do in two batches). Use the template to cut house shapes and place on baking sheets. Roll out scraps and cut more houses.

5

Bake

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until cookies have puffed up and are golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

6

Decorate

Use white and colored icing to draw tiles, window frames, and door frames. Attach candies and other decorations, breaking candies into pieces if necessary.
