A star is born

Ingredients

Cupcakes (basic vanilla or lemon flavor (see p.18 or p.26)) 1
Frosting (see p.16) 1
Gel food coloring to taste
Fondant golf ball size
Cornstarch (for anti-sticking) to taste
Royal icing (see p.16) 2 tbsp
Edible glue to taste
Silver sugar pearls to taste

Instructions

1

Prepare the cakes

Make the cupcakes and let cool. Make the frosting and divide into two portions, keeping one white and tinting the other light blue. Frost half of the cupcakes with the white frosting and the other half with the blue frosting; let dry.

2

Make fondant stars

Tint the fondant dark blue and knead until evenly colored. Dust the work surface with a little cornstarch, roll the fondant out to about 3 mm thick, and cut out 6 stars.

3

Prepare piping bags

Divide the royal icing into three portions and tint each a different shade of blue. Transfer to three piping bags fitted with fine tips.

4

Decorate the star cakes

Brush a little edible glue onto three white-frosted and three blue-frosted cupcakes, then attach the fondant stars. Using the lightest shade of royal icing, pipe a dot in the center of each star and place a sugar pearl on top.

5

Pipe the star cakes

For the remaining cupcakes, pipe a five-pointed star in a color of your choice. Pipe five dots between the outer points of the star (using another color). Using the darkest shade, pipe a small circle in the center of the star, fill it with a contrasting color, and finish with a small dot on top.
