Treasure Chest Cake

Ingredients

Cake (baked in a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan, trimmed to 6 x 3½ inches wide, 3¼ inches high in the center, 2¾ inches high at the edges) 1
Buttercream or Chocolate Buttercream Icing (for smooth frosting) to taste

Instructions

1

Bake the Cake

Bake and cool the cake. Trim to 6 x 3½ inches wide; use the trimmed scraps to build up a rounded top, 3¼ inches high at the center and 2¾ inches high at the edges.

2

Frost and Texture

Apply a smooth coat of frosting. Use the edge of a spatula to create horizontal wood-grain lines on the top and sides, spaced ½ inch apart. Use a knife to add random wood-grain effects.

3

Decorate the Edges

Use tip #47 to pipe the edge outline (smooth side up), with the center band ½ inch from the top edge.

4

Decorate the Lock

Use tip #4 to outline and fill the front lock plate, 1¼ x 2 inches wide (smooth with a finger dipped in cornstarch). Use tip #4 to dot rivets at the corners and on the lock plate; pipe two pairs of dots for the side handles and flatten them with a finger.

5

Panel Lines

Use the edge of a spatula to press lines on all sides to indicate the separate lid panels.

6

Keyhole

Use tip #4 to pipe an oval keyhole (slightly flattened), pipe around the keyhole and create chains hanging from the side handles. Use tip #3 to write a name on the lid. Serves 6.
