Apple Betty
A traditional American baked apple dessert made by layering apples and cake crumbs before baking.
Ingredients
apples (peeled, sliced)
8 lb
sugar
1 lb 8 oz
salt
0.25 oz (1.5 tsp)
nutmeg
0.08 oz (1 tsp)
lemon zest (grated)
0.12 oz (1.5 tsp)
lemon juice
2 oz
yellow or white cake crumbs
2 lb 8 oz
butter (melted)
2 oz

Step 1
Add apples, sugar, salt, nutmeg, lemon zest and lemon juice to a bowl and mix. Toss gently to combine evenly

Spread one-third of the apple mixture in a greased 12×20 inch (30×50 cm) baking dish, flatten it

Sprinkle one-third of the cake crumbs on top

Repeat the process until all apple mixture and cake crumbs are used up. There will be 3 layers of fruit and 3 layers of cake crumbs

Evenly pour the melted butter over the top

Bake in a 350°F (175°C) oven for about 1 hour until the fruit is soft
