Butter Bread Pudding
A classic dessert made by soaking bread slices in an egg-and-milk custard and baking until set. Best served warm or chilled.
Ingredients
Instructions
Step 1
Cut each bread slice in half. Brush melted butter on both sides of each bread slice.
Step 2
Arrange the bread slices in a staggered pattern in a buttered 10x12 inch (25x30 cm) baking dish. (If using a full-size hotel pan, double the amount.)
Step 3
Mix eggs, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract until well combined, then add the milk.
Step 4
Pour the egg mixture over the bread in the baking dish.
Step 5
Refrigerate for 1 hour or longer to let the bread absorb the custard. If needed, press the bread down once or twice during the resting period.
Step 6
Lightly sprinkle ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg on top.
Step 7
Place the baking dish into a larger pan filled with about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of hot water.
Step 8
Bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for about 1 hour until set.
Step 9
Serve warm or chilled, with whipped cream, English custard sauce, fruit compote, or powdered sugar.
