Story

Experience the delightful crunch of traditional Japanese arare right at home. This irresistibly addictive snack perfectly balances a sweet soy glaze with the savory, umami-rich flavors of nori and sesame seeds, capturing the authentic taste of an Asian market in every bite.

Ingredients

sugar ¹⁄ 3 cup
butter ¼ cup (½ stick)
vegetable oil ¼ cup
light corn syrup ¼ cup
Japanese soy sauce 1 tablespoon
rice or corn cereal (such as Crispix or Chex) 12-ounce box
seaweed and sesame seed topping (nori furikake) (one-half to three-fourths of a 1.76-ounce bottle) ½ cup

Instructions

1

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Line two 15x10x1-inch jelly roll pans with aluminum foil.

2

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, heat sugar, butter, oil, corn syrup, and soy sauce over medium-low heat, stirring until the sugar completely dissolves and forms a smooth, thick syrup, about 2 to 3 minutes.

3

Step 3

Place the cereal in a large bowl and pour in the syrup. Sprinkle with seaweed sesame seasoning and gently stir with a wooden spoon until the cereal becomes sticky and is evenly coated with a thin layer of syrup and seasoning. Spread the cereal evenly in the prepared baking pans. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and stir again. Let cool completely, then store in an airtight bag or container.
