Spicy Meat Pie with Hash Brown Topping

Ingredients

vegetable oil 1 tbsp
onion (chopped) 1
garlic (chopped) 2 cloves
red pepper (chopped) 1
red chili (chopped) 1 large
ground beef 500 g (1 lb 2 oz)
all-purpose flour 2 tbsp
tomato paste 2 tsp
beef stock 500 ml (18 fl oz)
Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp
canned chopped tomatoes 210 g canned
cannellini beans (drained and rinsed) 400 g canned
baking potatoes (for hash brown topping) 3 large
sun-dried tomatoes (chopped) 4
basil (for garnish, optional) to taste

Instructions

1

Browning the Ground Beef

Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan). Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and gently fry the onion, garlic, red pepper, and chili for 10–15 minutes. Add the ground beef, increase the heat, and cook until fully browned.

2

Simmering the Sauce

Stir in the flour and tomato paste until well combined. Add the stock, Worcestershire sauce, chopped tomatoes, and cannellini beans. Season and simmer gently for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Transfer to a baking dish.

3

Making the Hash Brown Topping

Meanwhile, prepare the topping: steam the potatoes with their skins on for 10 minutes, then coarsely grate them into strands. Gently spread over the meat sauce, scatter with the sun-dried tomatoes, and drizzle with a little oil.

4

Baking

Bake in the preheated oven for 30–40 minutes until golden and bubbling. Scatter with basil to garnish if desired. The meat sauce can be frozen for up to one month.
