finely grated orange zest (colored part of the skin) 3/4 teaspoon

unsalted butter (1 stick, cut into chunks) 1/2 cup
vanilla extract 1 1/2 teaspoons
orange juice 1/4 cup
large egg (plus 1 large egg white) 1
all-purpose white flour 3/4 cup
baking powder 1/2 teaspoon
salt 1/8 teaspoon
chopped pecans (2 ounces) 1/2 cup
semisweet chocolate morsels (3 ounces) 1/2 cup
bittersweet (not unsweetened) or semisweet chocolate (broken up or coarsely chopped) 3 ounces
candied-cherry or pecan halves (for topping) 32 to 36
unsweetened chocolate (broken up or coarsely chopped) 1 ounce

Instructions

1

Step 1

In a medium bowl, stir together the cranberries, apricots, raisins, and orange juice and let stand for 15 minutes, or until most of the liquid is absorbed.

2

Step 2

In a medium bowl, thoroughly stir together the flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.

3

Step 3

In a large, microwave-safe bowl, microwave the bittersweet or semisweet and unsweetened chocolates and butter on 100-percent power for 1 minute. Stir well. Continue microwaving on 50-percent power, stirring at 30-second intervals. Stop microwaving before the chocolates completely melt and let the residual heat finish the job. (Alternatively, in a medium, heavy saucepan, melt the chocolates and butter over lowest heat, stirring frequently; be very careful not to burn. Immediately remove from the heat.) Let cool to warm.
