Story

These adorable carrot-shaped steamed buns make breakfast fun for kids. The natural orange color comes from carrot juice, and the soft texture is perfect for little hands.

Ingredients

all-purpose flour 500 grams (about 4 cups)
instant yeast 5 grams (1 packet)
warm water 250 ml (1 cup)
carrots 2 medium, grated or pureed
sugar 2 tablespoons
salt pinch

Instructions

1

Activate the Yeast

Dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water (should feel like warm bath water). Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy. This ensures the yeast is alive and ready to make the dough rise.

2

Make the Dough

Mix flour and salt in a large bowl. Pour in the yeast mixture and grated carrots. Stir until a shaggy dough forms, then knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. The dough should be soft but not sticky.

3

First Rise

Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour (longer in winter, less in summer) until doubled in size.

4

Shape the Buns

Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into an oval carrot shape. Use a knife or toothpick to make slight lines down the sides for the carrot texture. Place on parchment-lined steamer basket.

5

Second Rise and Steam

Let shaped buns rest for 15 minutes. Steam over boiling water for 12-15 minutes. Turn off heat and let sit 2 minutes before opening. Serve warm.
