Stained Glass Cookies

Ingredients

Sour candy mix (separate by color, place each color in a bag and crush coarsely) 12 oz
Basic decorative cookie dough (see recipe on page 357) to taste

Instructions

1

Preparation

Place an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350°F (approx. 175°C). Line two baking sheets with aluminum foil and lightly grease them.

2

Crush Candy

Separate the sour candy mix by color, and place each color into a separate resealable plastic bag. Seal the bag, then use a rolling pin or meat tenderizer to crush the candy coarsely.

3

Roll and Cut Dough

Prepare and roll out the dough according to the instructions on page 357. Use 3-inch shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies. Use a small flower-shaped cutter or the small hole of a large round piping tip to cut out and remove a small shape from the center of each cookie (scraps can be re-kneaded and re-rolled).

4

Fill and Bake

Arrange the cookies on the baking sheets, spaced 1 inch apart. Fill each hole with crushed candy. If making ornaments, poke a small hole in the top of each cookie with a bamboo skewer. Bake one sheet at a time for 8 to 10 minutes, until the candy melts and the edges of the cookies are lightly golden. Cool completely on the baking sheets, then gently lift the cookies off the aluminum foil.

5

Storage

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
