Vegetarian Eight-Treasure Rice

Story

With deep roots in Chinese home cooking tradition, this vegetarian Eight-Treasure Rice is a staple of Lunar New Year and other major family celebrations, where its chewy glutinous rice base and sweet layered fillings are viewed as a symbol of abundance, unity, and good fortune for the year ahead.

Ingredients

black rice to taste
glutinous rice to taste
coix seed to taste
sago to taste
soy bean to taste
adzuki bean to taste
mung bean to taste
red rice to taste
walnut to taste
dried grape to taste
lotus seed to taste
mango 1 piece

Instructions

1

Step 1

Soak all beans and grains in water for 5 hours, then arrange them on a plate.

2

Step 2

Place the plate into a steamer, bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat, then turn to low heat and steam for half an hour. Mix in sliced red dates.

3

Step 3

This is what the finished steamed dish looks like. Actually, you can add white sugar directly before steaming and eat it just like this. But I didn't eat it that way.

4

Step 4

I took a mango, scooped out the flesh, blended it into a puree, and poured it over the eight-treasure rice.

5

Step 5

Then stir it well and eat! This makes the flavor more pure, with a true taste of nature.
